The fluid in that is probably good "for life", but I wanted to changed it anyway. It's a very low-impact unit, under very little pressure.
#Vtm 4 fluid full
Diagnosis: Do 10 figure-eight patterns with the steering wheel at full lock. I don't think Honda has a drain interval for the transfer case fluid. VTM-4 Differential Fluid (5.6 quarts required), P/N 08200-9003. The drain plug on the differential unit has a large magnet on it, similar to the transmission drain plug, because the rear unit has clutches in it similar to the transmission clutches. It took about 3.1 volumes of the gear oil bottle to fill the rear differential unit.
#Vtm 4 fluid free
Per the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act if Honda were to keep the specifications secret and not permit there to be any alternative they would have to provide the fluid free to customers. So what I did is empty the smaller gear oil bottle, "triple-rinse" it (and the pump) with a bit of the VTM-4 fluid into the drain pan, then fill the gear oil bottle with VTM-4 fluid to go into the differential. Anyone could make a VTM-4 equivalent fluid if they wanted to do so. The rear differential was also very easy, but my fluid transfer pump didn't screw onto the larger opening of the gallon jug. I used my small fluid transfer pump to do (related picture below). The transfer case takes about 2/3 of a quart of the gear oil. Crack the fill plug loose first (to make sure you can fill it back up), then open the drain plug. I bought one quart of Mobil 1 75W-90 LS fluid and 1 gallon of VTM-4 fluid.īoth are incredibly easy to change. Using VTM-4 fluid in an iVTM-4 unit certainly didnt do it any favors, but it could be as relatively harmless as using 10W-30 engine oil in an application designed for 0W-20 for one interval or as damaging as using olive oil in a transmission - I suspect the reality is somewhere in between. The rear differential takes VTM-4 fluid, about 3 quarts (sold only as a gallon). Lol.i sure hope that is true on my 13 crv.it alarmed to change dif fluid at 12k. Hope this puts it in perspective, some how. After that 1st change the interval stretches to 30k, so the 2nd change would be around 45K, and so on.

The transfer case is just a set of hypoid gears, and takes some form of 80 or 90 weight oil. For reference, on a new Ridgeline the VTM fluid is to be changed around 15,000 miles. Some other folks were asking about changing these fluids recently. First-generation (2003-2008) Honda Pilots will most likely illuminate the VTM-4 warning light due to insufficient differential fluid or a sensor error, with.
